Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has just published his first Sherlock Holmes story a street in South London is the first to get electric lighting… In Whitechapel East London five women are brutally murdered by the world’s first recognised serial killer Jack The Ripper. We tread in the footsteps of the infamous Jack The Ripper down the dark narrow gas-lit alleyways immortalised in such films as “From Hell”. We’ll follow the case of the unsolved Whitechapel murders that would lead Scotland Yard to Queen Victoria herself. Led by one of the renowned London Blue Badge Guides we’ll visit four murder sights. Our ‘Ripperologist’ will run through some of the suspects who sparked a Victorian Whodunit that’ll leave you as gripped as its victims. Whether hurtling through space or assuming a precarious balance the members of the Israel-based company are perfectly attuned to one another. Three continues artistic director Ohad Naharin’s ongoing fascination with the body and movement using the company’s astonishing physical style to full effect – dancers contort and shimmy strike improbable balances and move with fearsome velocity to a diverse soundtrack that ranges from Bach’s Goldberg Variations to an ethereal score by Brian Eno and The Beach Boys’ unabashedly joyous song You’re Welcome. Fusing elements of folk dance martial arts and ballroom Three is a bewitching display of choreographic extremes which have left audiences astounded wherever it has been seen. Batsheva continues its week-long Dance Umbrella 2008 programme with the UK premiere of Mamootot an intense work on an intimate scale with the audience surrounding the dancers.

This fairytale of passion and prejudice is choreographed by David Bintley who weaves some delightful new twists into this timeless fable. Oct 31st 1st Nov Stravinsky: A Celebration! pays homage to the great composer Igor Stravinsky. Based on Russian legend the enthralling Firebird is performed alongside Petrushka a story of a rebellious puppet’s bid for love and freedom and Michael Corder’s brand new version of Le Baiser de la fée based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ice Maiden.
An award winning contemporary dance show for children and their grown ups by Spanish company Aracaladanza Recommended for ages 4 + Using as a starting point Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights the performance reveals a series of rich and engaging visions through dance colour light and design. In 2008 A Slice of Paradise won three major MAX Awards in Spain the equivalent of Oliviers in the UK. The endlessly inventive choreography of Enrique Cabrera it includes bubbles strawberries puppets magic dancing torches and an playful delight in the absurd that sees newspapers and bin liners come to life. Families can come early or stay on after the show to enjoy the games and events in Sadler’s Wells Foyer. These include a chance to draw on and add in their own figure to a towering sculpture of paper-chain people create a new wardrobe of paper clothes to wear or stage their own choreography on a fuzzy felt wall.

Contrasting flashes of daring athleticismwithmoments of touching beauty Yesterday interweaves scenes of intimate and vulnerable tenderness with provocative and playful choreography remaining as stirring and socially relevant as ever.
The Mariinsky Opera and Ballet toured the world for many years under the name of the Kirov. Now Sadler’s Wells is delighted to host this world famous company for the first time in the theatre’s history. Programme Two features the UK premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s Pierrot Lunaire presented at New York City Center earlier in 2008. Pierrot Lunaire was choreographed on Mariinsky prima ballerina Diana Vishneva who dances this role again in London. The evening is completed by two of George Balanchine’s timeless works – Apollo and The Prodigal Son set to scores by two of the 20th Century’s greatest Russian composers Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev.
Sankai Juku create dreamlike performances which weave meticulous spellbinding movement with breathtaking large- scale staging in a theatrical experience quite unlike any other. Founded by Artistic Director Ushio Amagatsu in 1975 the company has performed in more that 40 countries and over 700 cities and has won countless awards including an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production confirming their status as Japan’s finest example of Butoh. Sadler’s Wells is delighted to present two contrasting works from the company’s repertoire over separate evenings. The first Kinkan Shonen explores a boy’s dream about life and death using mystic imagery as dancer’s bodies slowly transform into a series of almost non human shapes as a live peacock patrols the stage. Toki one of the company’s newest works is a mesmerising example of contemporary Butoh dance. performed by eight dancers on a stunning set that brings to mind elements of both science fiction and an ancient world. Originating in Japan in the late 1950′s Butoh is an expressionist contemporary dance form characterised by the physical appearance of the dancers with white painted faces and shaved heads and the use of abstract sometimes grotesque imagery.
