It’s December 1968 and Judy Garland is about to make her comeback… again. In a London hotel suite with her young new fiance at her side, Garland battles with a tornado of drugs and alcohol as she undertakes an exhausting series of concerts at the Talk of the Town to try and reclaim her crown as the greatest talent of her generation. Despite a series of failed marriages and a wrecked Hollywood career, Judy remains a tough, compelling, remarkable woman always armed to the teeth with her legendary razor-sharp wit. Featuring a breathtaking performance by Tracie Bennet the production features several of Garland’s classic songs, including The Man That Got Away, Come Rain or Come Shine, The Trolley Song and Somewhere Over the Rainbow, with a live onstage band.

The Rivals @ Theatre Royal Haymarket

November 30th, 2010

The Rivals @ Theatre Royal HaymarketThe Rivals is Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s social farce set in Bath in 1775. The fashionable world is descending on Bath to show off its finery, take the waters, enjoy the gossip and pursue romance. Among them are the verbally misguided Mrs Malaprop, her absurdly romantic niece Lydia Languish, the blinkered Sir Anthony Absolute, the blustering Irishman Sir Lucius O’Trigger and the bumpkin Bob Acres. Throughout the course of a single day these suitors and schemers and their servants indulge in an assortment of hilariously extravagant intrigues before everyone is paired off to their own satisfaction. Peter Hall’s production of The Rivals, which played in his season at Theatre Royal Bath before this West End visit, stars Penelope Keith and Peter Bowles, two well-known names who once starred alongside each other in popular sitcom To The Manor Born and are now appearing together on stage for the first time. Keith, who is also known for playing Margot in The Good Life, plays the plum role of Mrs Malaprop, while Bowles takes on Sir Anthony Absolute. The Theatre Royal Haymarket welcomes back The Rivals, which opened the present theatre in 1821.

Bill Bailey Dandelion Mind @ Wyndhams Theatre

November 30th, 2010

Bill Bailey Dandelion Mind @ Wyndhams TheatreFeaturing Bill’s trademark musical interludes, observations and stories of the road, Dandelion Mind will be based loosely on the theme of doubt (or will it?), as we follow Bill from his real-life saga of being trapped by the ash cloud, to his barely contained rants about celebrity, TV, creationism and Michael Winner. He demonstrates new instruments, both ancient and modern, he sings an internet love song, a lament about punk heroes, Iranian hip-hop, and plays a mean folk-bouzouki. Thomas the Doubter gets a new look, and Darwin?s curious obsessions and the myth of intelligent design are all worked over in Bailey?s own surreal style. He revisits the music of his youth, with a brand-new French Disco re-working of Gary Numan?s hit, Cars, played in his own inimitable way, and maybe some Wurzels-based remixes of classic German techno. Just your normal Bill Bailey gig, then.
